ESSAY IDEA

The topic my group chose to talk about was obesity. The way it could help me with my writing is by forcing me to do research. Which I've never really have had to do much of in the past. It could possibly make me be more efficient when researching a specific topic in the future.

PROS & CONS OF OBESITY

The article I read was on CBSNews.com titled " The Blame Game & Obesity in America". It talked about how consumers and and big food companies should both be to blame for the obesity problem. Although the food companies basically say it's not our fault consumers are getting fat of our product they should make better choices. Even though these companies do have multibillion-dollar marketing ads. That target adults and children. Which can lead to unhealthy eating choices.
It also doesn't help that the food industry is lagging in the nutrition research area. Which has led to most companies to have " nutrition research overload". In order to make up years and even decades on missed opportunities to do important research. Such as when it came to trans fats. It was always believed that saturated fats was the enemy. This lead to companies to reformulate their products. In order to try and get rid of the saturated fat. Only later to realize that the trans fats they replaced the saturated fat with was even worse.
And in a even more conspiracy like viewpoint has lead people to believe in something even more drastic. People like Dr. David Katz who believes companies have made their food more "addictive". And if this is true it leads people to crave and want the companies food even more. Although officials who work in the food industry don't know of any company doing so. Even if  they are doing this or not people will still eat the companies product no matter how unhealthy it is.
The conclusion I came up with is no matter what is done to combat obesity it will always be a problem. It's the consumers choice of what he or she decides to eat.

TEXT ANALYSIS # 1

"Fat letters" are being sent home to kids that are overweight or obese. These letters can cause problems when it comes to how families handle the situation. There is also a possibility of inaccurate measurement readings. A full assessment would be a better way to analyze this issue. Although these letters could promote conversations on how to be healthier.

REFLECTIONS ON WEEK 1

1. The only reasons that my participation would vary is because of laziness or not wanting to do the work for whatever excuse or reason I can come up with. Other than that I have access to the internet from my computer and my phone.
2. The first I watched Professor Brian Cox lecture on the universe. It was one learning experience I always remember because of what he was explaining and how confusing it was. I had to re-watch certain parts of it to try to have a better understanding of certain things. There are still some things in that lecture that I will never understand. It didn't change how I think or learn certain things I just realized I had to pay closer attention to every word.
3. Excited- learning about things I didn't know much about before taking this class
Concerned- the work load if it's a lot
I'm looking forward to learning anything new if I pay attention to what is being taught or discussed.
